Endoscopic Bulking for Stress Incontinence

This fairly new procedure helps female patients with urinary stress incontinence. Stress urinary incontinence is a common problem in women after childbearing or menopause. It is defined as a sudden leakage of small amounts of urine with increases in intra-abdominal pressure that might occur with coughing, sneezing or exercise. Endoscopic Bulking for stress incontinence procedure is done in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. A fiber optic tube called an endoscope is introduced into the urethra by the physician. The physician uses the endoscope to visualize the urinary system and inject the bladder and urethra with a bulking agent such as Durasphere. This bulking agent is effective in preventing stress urinary incontinence. Patients should consult their physician for a complete explanation of the procedure and its associated risks and complications.
